Ways to Boost Immunity Part 4: Immune Supporting Habits

Welcome to part 4 of this never ending series…Just kidding, we are getting there. If you just stumbled across this I am a Precision Nutrition Level 1 Coach. I am sharing an infographic on immune boosting practices which is very timely.

One of the cool things about us Precision Nutrition coaches is that we don’t preach any one way of eating over another. I don’t care how you get this stuff into your system as long as you get it.

Here are some random thoughts.

Protein- As a general rule women don’t get enough. If you can’t get it through your meals add a protein bar or shake.

Vitamin C- this is a water based vitamin.  That means your body can absorb it without fats being present but you will also pee out excess. So if you take tons of Vitamin C at once you won’t get the same effect as if you spread it out over the day.

Vitamin D- You don’t get enough. I can almost guarantee it. Make a Vitamin D check part of your yearly physical. Taking a supplement does not mean you  are absorbing it. A number of clients I know have a hellacious time getting their Vitamin D levels up no matter how much they take.

Certain delivery systems are more efficient than others. For example, sub-linguals are generally better than pills. Talk to your Doctor.

Zinc- If you take it at night with Magnesium, ( ZMA) you may sleep better and feel more rested. Zinc has a lot of functions in the body and you probably don’t get enough magnesium in your diet.

Omega 3- There is no doubt in my mind that Omega 3’s are beneficial. The only two questions are how are you going to get them and how much do you want to pay.

There is so much controversy over eating fish these days that you need to pay attention to this. Whether it is mercury levels in ocean species or the problems associated with farm raised fish, I am not a big fan of eating a lot of it. Just my opinion.

So if you need to take a supplement there are all sorts of claims of potency, freshness, bio-availablilty etc… You can spend $100’s of dollars for ultra pure Omega 3’s or get the Costco brand for pennies like I do.

I don’t see a difference but …that doesn’t mean there isn’t one.
