Build Your Home Gym From Scratch

How to build your home gym on a budget

Here are a series of videos taking you through what you need and what to avoid.

Build a Quality place to work out without breaking the bank or taking up too much room.

I have a growing YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/mfactorfitness

Where you can see exercise videos, join challenges and learn how to use your new stuff!

I picked this as the first video because most of us over 50 have mobility and joint pain issues we need to address and I am a stickler about these things.

None of these things are expensive and they will fix your aches and pains.

I have a YouTube Playlist here, How to Fix Joint Pain

I will be honest here, I use bands for myself and my people more than I ever thought I would. They are inexpensive, extremely versatile and easy to learn and very easy to take with you on vacation.

This is another area where you can shop for price. I haven’t seen any real quality differences over the years and most companies are resellers on Amazon.

This is one piece of equipment where you can price shop on Amazon. I have the original TRX and have tried countless knock-offs and they all do the job.

Buyer Beware on adjustable Dumbbells. Don’t go cheap.

  • Good ones start around $300.
  • I would avoid Bowflex. They charge a premium and they use a lot of plastic that tends to break and get finicky.
  • Amazon has a number of resellers rebranding similar looking dumbbells so do your research.
  • Stands are very useful.

When you get into benches and barbells we are talking about taking up more space and you can notice a quality difference in the benches and barbells, especially in the benches. Please do not skimp on the bench quality. You don’t necessarily need on with a lot of attachments but you need it to be sturdy.

Amazon has some good ones starting around $200 to $250.

We can agree to disagree here but I think you only need one cardio machine in the house, if any.I have a treadmill, an elliptical and an upright bike and I only occasionally use the treadmill but it definitely serves a purpose for my training.

What I wanted to give you is a brief summary of how to build a workable gym when space and money are an issue.

Remember your results will be a result of your consistency and not how much you spend on equipment. Except the bench. If you are going to get a bench get a good one.

Buy once, cry once.
