Plus 5 Bonus Reasons
Here is an interesting article from ProGrade about diet soda. They have their 5 reasons not to drink the stuff and you can find it here, http://mfactorfitness.getprograde.com/how-diet-soda-kills.html.
If I can add my own opinion in the mix I would add the following 5 reasons:
1. When you drink diet soda you are not drinking something else. You are drinking chemicals instead of choosing something with health benefits such as water, coffee or tea.
2. When you drink diet soda, you are placing a burden on your liver and digestive system because they need to figure out what to do with all these foreign chemicals. The result is increased inflammation.
3. The manufacturers of these drinks say they are not addicting but that is not what I see. Whether it is an addiction or simply a behavior, people get hooked on their brand of soda. This leads to a constant flow of these chemicals into their bloodstream everyday. How many people do you know have to have at least one diet soda a day?
4. Whether there is anything harmful in the ingredients in the short-term or long-term are two totally different questions. There are studies linking diet cola to bone loss, metabolic syndrome, diabetes etc… There is a huge difference between taking something in small doses over infrequent periods of time and dosing yourself everyday with large amounts of chemicals that have a shady past.
5. In my experience training clients, I have had several cases where they were working out and eating clean yet still couldn’t lose weight. This by the way applies to both men and women. Their only vice was the daily couple of diet colas. Once they cut those out of their diet the weight started to come off.
So check out the ProGrade article for their take on this. The article leads into an article about controlling blood sugar and their solution for it. Pretty good stuff.
