Post 43: New Videos On My Website

Do you know what the hardest part of personal training is? Nope, not getting up at 4:30. Nope, not working until 7 pm. Finding time to workout? Nope. Give up?

Making videos. Man this stinks. I have been reading that it would be wise to have videos up on my website, M Factor Fitness. It does make sense. Having video helps the potential client get a feel for my personality and how I train. An easy way for someone to get to know me.

Theoretically until you have to actually shoot the video. Then it gets ugly because I am not a natural actor. In fact, there really are two things I don’t like doing.
1. Being in front of a camera for pictures.
2. Being in front of a camera for videos.

So I could mess with the videos for the rest of my time here on earth and I would never be happy with them. I decided that I might as well throw something up there just to have it. Is it good? I hope so. The idea is pretty simple. I just want to spend a few minutes on each page of the website to introduce the page and give you some information about my training.

If possible, I would like some feedback on what you think. Because, let’s be honest, I am going to probably
need to redo it. I am hoping that the more I do this, the more comfortable I become. Kind of like when you see actors in their first movie and now.

If anyone else has some funny stories, let me know because I am filled with trepidation with these videos. Now be nice. No need to make fun of me, let’s keep this constructive.

Post 36: Questions You Are Afraid to Ask Your Personal Trainer.

Personal trainers and stereotypes? Yeah, believe it or not people have pre-conceptions about my profession. You too may have questions but were afraid to ask.

So let’s play

Ask a personal trainer.

1. If I ask you these questions will you make me push-ups for the entire hour?

No. I don’t think I have ever been offended by a question. Even if I was, I have never made anyone do push-ups for an hour. Now drop and give me twenty Ha Ha Ha!

2. I hear most trainers are gigolos. Are you a gigolo?

I am happily married and have two kids. I am the farthest thing from a gigolo.

 3. I hear most trainers are as dumb as a brick. Are you as dumb as a brick?

Well, you can draw you own conclusions on that one. I have a B.A. in History and a B.S. in Business Management from Trinity University. I am one of those corporate drop-outs that decided I would be happier pursuing what I love rather than playing the corporate game.

 4. You look older than twenty. I thought you had to be twenty years old to be a trainer.

How much did you know about anything at age twenty? I am pretty sure that anyone who can stay up all night, eat anything they want and never gain a pound of fat is not the type of trainer that is going to be sympathetic to the issues of a fifty year old. I really don’t think there are any age limits for trainers. I am 46 now, which is about the average age of my clients.

5. Do you have to bench 300 pounds to be a trainer?

No, I am afraid you have to actually study and take tests to become a trainer. Actually you don’t and that is the scary part about this. I think there are a lot of trainers out there whose only credentials are that they can bench 300 +.

6. Do you wear spandex and jump around?

I do not wear spandex and I rarely jump around unless we are doing plyometrics.

7. Do you take your shirt off and stare in the mirror when we train?

No, I am really not that vain.

8. Do you shout at clients when you train them like they do on ” Biggest Loser”?

No, I have never shouted at anyone and I am not going to start now.

9. Do you make your clients push cars and stuff like they do on ” Biggest Loser”?

Remember, the ” Biggest Loser” is just a TV show.

10. Have you ever had anyone have a heart attack while training?

No one has ever had a heart attack while working out with me.

Join me next time as maybe I will field another batch of questions.
In the mean time have you joined my fitness university? Look to your right and you will see the sign-up form. It is free and it will help you get in shape.

Post 34: Lose Weight By Eating More This Holiday

Here is an interesting article by Kevin DiDonato. Hormones are always a complex issue to explain. I know I do a poor job of it sometimes but Kevin does an outstanding job in this article. The holidays are over but the Super Bowl is coming up, which is one of the all time great eating days.

One of the most important parts of any nutrition plan is the free day. The idea is simple. Follow your eating plan for six days. On the seventh day, throw all rules out the window. With the free day you can eat as much of whatever you want. You would think this would be a bad thing. The one day off would ruin all the discipline and work you put in during the week but it never does.

I know this to be a fact: Free days absolutely help you lose more weight during the week.

This article on Leptin certainly would support this concept. The free day concept is used by Weight Watchers, Body For Life and countless other programs, so there has to be some truth behind it. I know it to be a fact. Why it works can be up for debate but there is no doubt in my mind that the concept of free day or holiday eating/overeating  it is a critical part of fat loss. And I know it sounds crazy.

As always, this blog is for your education. Read it, think about it and draw your own conclusions. One thing I like about the ProGrade team is that they back every product with a 60 day money back guarantee. So if this makes sense to you, give it a try. If it doesn’t work as promised, get your money back.

Lose Weight By Eating More This Holiday

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CSCS, CES

We are full blown into the holiday season.

And you may be feeling stuffed, lazy and FAT.

But overeating during the holidays does not have the spell the end of the road for your weight loss.

In fact, having days where you overeat can actually BOOST your metabolism.

Yes, you heard me correctly: overeating can ACTUALLY help you lose weight.

Hold on a second though.

I am not telling you that EVERYDAY you are able to OVEREAT and lose weight.

But the occasional feast, say your typical holiday meals, may actually be good for your metabolism.

Confused?  Let me explain…

Fat Burning Hormones

We have these funny little hormones which are released from our fat cells which regulate energy intake and our METABOLISM.

Those two hormones are Leptin and Ghrelin.

When Leptin is increased you have a DECREASE in energy intake.

Leptin is the good angel who Makes You Stop Eating

You see, Leptin has the ability to cross the blood brain barrier and travel to your BRAIN.

Once in your brain, it cuddles up to your hypothalamus and tells it about what is going on in your stomach.

Leptin Communicates with your brain
Leptin then tells YOUR brain you are full.

This stimulates your body to stop eating and then INCREASE calorie burn.

Now Ghrelin works in the opposite.

Is the Ying to Leptin’s Yang!

Ghrelin tells your body and brain that you need to EAT MORE because you are lacking nutrients therefore lacking energy.

Now when you are overweight, your body becomes resistant to one key hormone and that is Leptin.

You body might be resistant to Leptin and all its WONDERFUL benefits.

And obesity, you are full-blown resistant to Leptin, which may make it harder for you to control food intake and also REDUCES your metabolism.

Overeating And Leptin

When you overeat, your body releases Leptin allowing it to travels to your brain, telling it you are full.

Then, with all the calories you have ingested, your body REALLY wants to return to homeostasis or to what it perceives as normal.

So it RAMPS up calories burning to try to get your body back to normal.

This burns more calories.

Stimulating your metabolism BOOST Calories burn,
preventing it from being stored as fat.

This gives your body the burst to stimulate FAT BURNING!

What Else You Can Do…

And you can help further INCREASE your metabolism by exercising.

That’s right, exercise!

Exercise burns extra calories which may help keep your metabolism and FAT burning firing.

Enjoy The Holidays (In Moderation)…

The holiday season is a time of family, great food and LOADS of calories.

Indulging a few times per year may stimulate your metabolism to new heights.

Overeating may stimulate a very important hormone, possibly stimulating fat burning.

And this happens is a NATURAL process and stimulates your metabolism to keep you at a healthy weight.

But in order to maximize your metabolism-firing hormones, you need to do extra to keep it firing.

Exercise and getting back “on the wagon” the VERY NEXT day spells damage control for your body.

So enjoy yourself this holiday season!

Just remember to stick to your weight loss goals and enjoy yourself, and the feast in front of you!

Because, who knows what will keep your METABOLISM firing!

Post 12: M Factor Fitness- what is it all about

Here is a question I get all the time. ” What exactly is M Factor Fitness and do you train people better than you write?” The answer is yes. I am a much better trainer than writer and thank you for asking.

If I had to define it, I would say that M Factor Fitness is my extended family. My average client stays with me well over two years and in this business that says something. I really like the fact that I have the opportunity to work with clients and make a difference in their lives. My job is not to hope that 1 out of 10 clients make progress.

Post 10: Value of B Vitamins in Cutting Heart Disease Risk Challenged

Here is the link, http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE63M4UR20100423.

In my humble opinion, the leading predictor of heart disease is genetics. Anything else may have a slight effect but as the article points out it is very hard to isolate any causes. There are too many variables.
Exercise is the most important factor in surviving heart disease although it may not prevent it. If anything, eating a diet rich in B vitamins will help you with your energy levels and keeping body fat levels lower, so I still recommend it.
